Bio

Dave Ito Chokroun is a musician and multimedia artist active in western Canada for over a decade. He has been a featured performer at Open Space (Victoria), Western Front (Vancouver), Vancouver Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Calgary, and in the Vancouver Jazz Festival.

Dave’s music appears on the independent labels Newfangled Album (Toronto), Oscillation of Pressure (Vancouver), and Soldierpumps (Vancouver). He has played on over a dozen albums of creative music, jazz, noise, and indie rock, and performed with Canadian and international musicians including Eugene Chadbourne, Myk Freedman, Fred Frith, Jandek, NOW Orchestra, and Vancouver New Music. His compositions have been performed by Arraymusic (Toronto), neither / nor (Toronto), and nach Hause (Calgary).

He holds a B. Mus from the University of Victoria and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Simon Fraser University; he has also studied composition and double bass at York University. His instrument teachers include Marietta Orlov, Eva Solar-Kinderman and Edward Tait. He has studied composition with Owen Underhill, Gordon Mumma, John Celona, and Christopher Butterfield, and improvisation with Casey Sokol.

Dave is the founder and artistic director of the online label and “pataphysical disinfoshop” The Institute for the Study of Advanced Musical Research.
